As I said I tried and achieved to install Java on my VPS. Wasn’t so difficult, Java 1, 4 can be installed automatically, for java 1,5 and up you need to do it manually. By following the steps on the How to Centos web page I had (as a novice) my java installed in less than 2 hours and it wasn’t a problem.
Much more difficult for me was to install Tomcat and it was the place when I give up with my experiments. The set up of rights paths to Java, to Tomcat under Plesk was not possible for me (I tried different solutions posted over the web and no one works for me – I realized after that I had no enough of RAM memory).
I couldn’t set up Tomcat under Plesk so I went and install Virtualmin (open source server administration tool). I really appreciated the ease of the install and the futures given without any kind of fee. So I started to install my Tomcat and it went quite easy (I had to switch all redundant services to liberate enough of RAM memory). I installed Tomcat! wow! It was really a success for me.
So it is possible to install Java and Tomcat on the 1&1 VPS with 256 RAM.
I wanted also install Pentaho but the set up of Virtualmin was to difficult for me. I couldn’t find the right path for my application to work despite superb tutorial of Prashant (pdf file ) and the help of Rimu Hosting server tutorials.(Java hosting services)
I spend 3 weeks learning how to use Putty, Virtualmin, Filezilla – indispensable tools to administrate and keeping going your server and I realized that without a solid background in server administration it is not possible for me to run more complicated services like Opentaps, Openbravo, Pentaho, … at my own.
It was a challenge for me and I’m satisfied, I returned too Plesk which now after hours spent on rebooting, reinstalling, re-imaging, updating, chmodding …., is really easy to use. I even learn that Plesk for it’s database roots use the word admin (this one to know it tooks me 2 days 🙂 ).
Richer in experience I`m returning to my core knowledge which is so popular MARKETING – mainly e marketing, pre sell processes, email marketing, interactive marketing.
